“One team” is a phrase that comes up often in drug development conversations. Its meaning, however, is rarely defined. For customers, the difference between teams that truly operate as one and those that don’t is immediately apparent.

In many programs, coordination becomes an invisible responsibility. It isn’t formally assigned, but it still has to happen—connecting decisions, aligning timelines, and reconciling inputs across functions. When teams don’t operate as one, that work often falls to the customer.

Working as one team doesn’t mean eliminating roles or blurring accountability. It means aligning early enough that decisions are made with a shared understanding of their downstream implications.

When teams operate in silos, information is repeated. Context is re-explained. Decisions made in one area surface later as constraints in another. Progress depends on ad hoc coordination that sits outside the formal process.

When teams operate as one, that burden shifts. Conversations start earlier. Clinical, manufacturing, and supply considerations are discussed together rather than sequentially. Issues are surfaced when there is still time to address them without disruption.

Communication is central to this way of working, but not in the form of polished updates or formal handoffs. What matters is accessibility: teams having familiarity with one another, willing to share information directly, pick up the phone, and resolve questions collaboratively.

A one team approach changes how development feels. Transitions between phases are smoother. Fewer surprises emerge late. Complexity isn’t removed, but it is managed earlier and more transparently.

“One team” is not about structure for its own sake. It is about creating the conditions where coordination replaces correction and where progress is built through shared understanding rather than escalation.

That operating reality underpins Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Accelerator™ Drug Development as a defining model of this moment. Built as a deeply integrated CDMO–CRO approach, it is designed to remove coordination from the customer’s shoulders by aligning scientific, manufacturing, and clinical decisions within a single development pathway.

To date, Accelerator™ Drug Development has supported hundreds of development programs for biotech and pharma customers, reflecting a growing recognition that true integration is not a promise—but an operating discipline that must be designed into how development work is done.
